Hello Friends

Capturing Smartphone photos of your pets are super important! No one is around your pet more than you!  You will often notice them do the cutest, most adorable, funniest things. That crazy photo of the dog or cat that lays on your chest staring at you is just not a photo a professional photographer is likely to capture. That’s why I don’t like characterizing photos from a professional as “better” in many circumstances. Photos are created for two big reasons. First, and I think most important, is to immortalize some sort of moment. With pets, it’s all the fun, cute moments as well as when they might be playing to the camera. The second is what I am trying to do – to elevate the quality and emphasize your pet with a beautiful lighting and setting. At its best, it’s art. Of course, there is overlap, but I am also trying to immortalize a moment. That’s great, but it doesn’t capture the same moment…or all kinds of moments that mostly happen when I’m not around. Sure, I could get them if I lived in your house for a day, but that is pretty intrusive and not really what professional photographers do!

Your Smartphone Photos are Important!

So, when I hear my clients say “I don’t have any good photos of my pet” I tend to disagree. I understand what they mean, but they really are underestimating the importance of the photos they take. Sure, they may not have beautiful lighting or a perfect setting, but the images are still good. In fact, they are great because of the moment they immortalize. Recently, I did a memorial video for a special dog who was a huge part of her pet parent’s life.  This dog enjoyed so many adventures with her owner, which included hikes, climbing mountains, scenes around a family farm, photos of the dog in her wedding and images of her hugging that special dog.  These pictures weren’t “professional” in the traditional sense of perfect lighting and composition.  But they were still great. BTW – some of them were pretty darn “good” as well. Regardless, these photos allowed me to put together a beautiful slideshow that celebrated the life of that special dog.

Here is another example. I frequently capture photos of my dog with a smartphone. If I have the opportunity, I will try to take professional looking photos–images with good lighting and composition.  But it can’t always be accomplished.  Sometimes, you need to capture the image right now, before pets realize they are being photographed. Or they will stop doing that adorable thing when you move to get the right angle or light. I still love the photos! My smartphone apps automatically put together little slideshows of these photos. I actually use both an iPhone and an Android phone, and the apps on both phones (Photos, Google Photos) create the slideshows. Our Google Home screen displays photos taken on the Android phone automatically. It just rotates through them. Sure, I delete the very worst ones. but I am not so picky, because I just love seeing photos of my dog!   Wherever you are with your photography interests, don’t forget to capture photos of your pets. Our fur children can help us create wonderful memories for years to come! Enjoy these photos of my wonderful puppy captured with a smartphone.
